Crochet Sweaters for Men?

Recently, I saw a new Ravelry group for 'Crochet Menswear' by a fellow male crocheter. After reading a few responses, I want to weigh in on the discussion.

I think the bottom line is that as far as making men’s crochet sweaters, if you’re willing to both spend more money on fingering yarn, and work with very small hooks, then you should have no problem.

I’ve come to realize that, at least for me, the idea of making a crochet men’s sweater, using the current yarns, aren’t worth the time and effort. I’ve seen many men’s crochet patterns over the years, and the majority were made by women, thinking that’s what us guys might like (and never do!)

I’m leaning towards sweater jackets, or jackets/coats. Something that has more body to it, and we can get in and out of quickly.

How about you? What do you think?

I have to agree with you, I think that working with smaller gauge yarns is the ticket to making garments for guys. Jackets/Cardigans are good because you can open them up.

I would have to say that I have yet to see yarn, and think..."Hmmm...I want to wear that as a sweater." A scarf, sure...even a beanie...but no sweaters.

hey ken,
good take on the men's pattern discussion. you and i discussed you designing a men's pullover sweater, top down, in sport weight. i'd be willing to use fingering. it would drape so much better. my husband wouldn't wear a cardigan/jacket sweater or one of those sleeveless ones. i'm thinking a raglan style, top down, in fingering would be perfect. and, i'm willing to pay. you know that as i've purchased many of your pattens before - which, btw, need no further explanation. can't imagine i'd need further details than the ones you include in your patterns.
thanks,

Trying to find any kind of halfway decent crochet men's sweater pattern has been an exercise in near total futility so far, online anyway. I'm enough of a cheapo that I refuse to pay for a pattern (for the present, anyway; I'm still a beginner and any project will be a learning experience for a while yet).

If you have any non-frilly, truly masculine looking men's sweater patterns you can point me toward, I'd love to see one.

Thanks from another male crocheter.

I'm looking at the Celtic Knot sweater and I think it is from a book I have somewhere but can't find. Can you tell me where the pattern came from, please?

I's from small Red Heart booklet called 'Aran sweaters. It's no longer available.
